Job Description
A Fleet Technician is responsible for ensuring the mechanical, technical, and cosmetic integrity of the fleet to support safe, compliant, and efficient distribution operations. The role involves inspections, preventive maintenance, minor repairs, breakdown support, and coordination with service providers, while upholding Pedros People values and leadership principles.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Champion Pedros People values and leadership principles across the business, including new hires.
- Ensure the overall mechanical, technical, refrigeration, and cosmetic condition of the fleet, escalating defects, damages, or non-compliance.
- Conduct daily, weekly, and ad-hoc vehicle inspections in line with SOPs, including mechanical, cosmetic, refrigeration, tail lift, and tyre inspections.
- Complete, maintain, and submit all required vehicle checklists, inspection reports, and fleet documentation accurately and timeously.
- Perform preventive maintenance activities and minor repairs, including bulb and fuse replacements, fluid top-ups, and basic mechanical tasks to reduce downtime and avoid unnecessary call-outs.
- Ensure refrigeration systems are fully operational, including jump-starting fridges when required and recording weekly fridge hours.
- Respond to vehicle breakdowns promptly and assist with roadside or depot-based troubleshooting within acceptable timeframes.
- Carry out cosmetic inspections, verify vehicle cleanliness against the Truck Wash Schedule, and immediately escalate new damages.
- Inspect and ensure correct operation of tail lifts, tyres (tread, pressure, condition, brand, and spares), and all safety-critical components.
- Ensure all vehicles are fuelled before returning to the Distribution Centre.
- Coordinate, monitor, and verify repair and maintenance work completed by service providers to ensure quality and compliance.
- Maintain adequate stock levels of consumables, including replacement bulbs, fluids, and basic parts.
- Ensure bulkheads, standby electricity pods, cables, and related equipment are present, operational, and in good condition.
- Assist with requisitions, vehicle movements, and vehicle or driver testing when required.
- Submit completed check sheets, inspection reports, and supporting documentation to the Fleet Controller or relevant manager.
Requirements:
- Matric plus relevant technical qualification or trade certification in diesel mechanics, automotive technology, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of vehicle mechanics, refrigeration systems, and fleet maintenance practices.
- Proven experience in fleet inspections, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs.
- Experience working with service providers and managing repair quality.
- Proficient in record keeping, checklist completion, and compliance reporting.
- Code 14 Drivers Licence + PrDP with minimum 2 Years Experience
- 4 Years Experience working on HGV
